Many thrill-seeking Kentuckians venture to the Jackson Purchase area of the Commonwealth seeking the THRILL of winning lots of loot at Harrah's Casino.

For a lot of folks, that's the only reason to visit Metropolis. But "a lot of folks" would be incorrect in thinking that's it with regard to the small Illinois town of just under 6,000. For one thing, it's called "METROPOLIS." Surely, that rings a bell...a "bell" that's more than 80 years old.

We were introduced to FICTIONAL Metropolis with the first issue of Action Comics in 1938. That was the world's first look at Superman, among the most indelible comic book properties in pop culture history. In fiction, the Man of Steel's hometown is Smallville KS. In reality, Metropolis received that designation back in 1972. And the city plays its name to the hilt, and why not?

Metropolis IL -- Superman in the Real World

I say enjoy a night at the casino, but get to Metropolis early and take in all the amazing Superman culture the town has to give you. That includes the largest Superman statue in the world.

Make sure you pay attention to EVERYTHING at the Superman statue. I've been there multiple times and never noticed this:

Do yourself a favor and enjoy a little getaway in Metropolis. Loop in Paducah and make a weekend of it. A big casino and a big Superman statue. Sounds a BIG old time to me.
