Snow, ice, and howling winds couldn’t stop Taps. Last night, Mike Staser drove all the way from Beaver Dam through terrible roads to play at Owensboro VFW Post 696. Take a listen. Be inspired.

Owensboro VFW Post 696: Nine Years of Never Missing Taps

For more than nine years, Owensboro VFW Post 696 has performed Taps every night in Downtown Owensboro. No matter the weather. No matter the obstacles. Even as snow piled high and winds howled this weekend, the tradition carried on!

Mike Staser Braved the Blizzard

Imagining Mike driving through that storm, knowing the roads were slick and dangerous last night, really hit me. He came from Beaver Dam to play Taps. Standing there, horn in hand, snow swirling around him, it wasn’t just music. It was a promise kept to every fallen Veteran. “I knew someone had to do it,” Mike said. “Even in bad weather, heroes deserve to be remembered.” And he is right.

Sharing My Perspective

Seeing Mike, hearing Taps over the empty, snow-covered Post, and reading the community’s responses made this moment even more special. I shared my own feelings: “I come from a proud military family, so this is extra special, not only to me, but to everyone who supports veterans and all the men and women in uniform!

Others were inspired too:

Tom Embry: “That was as well as it can be played. Salute the excellence of protection.”

Tony Staser: “Thanks for your Service, Mike.”

Susan Renae Dickens: “Love this.”

Christie Duvall Cooper: “Veteran and forever a patriot. Good job.”

The Tradition Carries On

Even tonight, when roads are still snow-covered and slippery, though the VFW is closed, another Veteran will step up. Taps will play. The nightly ritual continues, unbroken, a reminder that dedication and honor don’t wait for perfect conditions. Nine years. One storm. And still, Taps plays. #amen

In Owensboro, snowstorms and icy roads can’t stop the heart of our Veterans, and it shouldn’t stop us from honoring them. Now, grab a tissue and press play.

A special thanks to Alicia Calloway, a member of the Auxiliary, who captured this inspirational moment, allowing us to share it with you!
