The Way That You Give: Rollie Pike Writes Song for Charlie Hayden [Video]
Rollie Pike is one of my favorite human beings. Truly. I can't express it enough. I don't get to see Rollie very often, but I know I will always see him in the 5pm hour on Day Two of the St. Jude Radiothon. He humbly walks through the door of the studio with tears in his eyes and love in his heart. He sits down, helps us get through the final two hours of our fundraising event and pours his heart out in song for the patients and families of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
See, Rollie has visited St. Jude. He drove down to Memphis with us a few years ago to experience the campus, meet some patients and families and truly see, first-hand, the magic of the hospital. When Rollie visits the Radiothon, he sings understanding the full scope of science, discovery, lyrics and love.
This year, there was even more weight in Rollie's heart. Rollie was carrying with him the spirit of Charlie Hayden, who passed, unexpectedly, just days before the St. Jude Radiothon. Rollie, like he often does, had been trying to process those feelings through song. However, he was having trouble finding the chords, the words.
Then, he started thinking about his yearly visit to the St. Jude Radiothon. And the lyrics, the melody started to flow. The result. This. An original song called The Way That You Give. And he sang it, beautifully, for his friend Charlie and the kids of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
A beautiful song from one of the most beautiful souls I know.
