Is it even possible to hear Dancing Queen by ABBA and not be inspired to bust a move?

70's supergroup ABBA has such an amazing catalog of hits that fans of all ages can enjoy in the fan-favorite jukebox musical, Mamma Mia! The stage production first premiered in 1999 in London and then was made into a movie in 2008 starring Meryl Streep and an incredible cast of actors.

Mamma Mia, Who's The Daddy?

Set in Greece, the story follows mother and daughter, Donna and Sophie Sheridan as they prepare for Sophie's wedding day. Unbeknownst to her mother, Sophie has invited three men from Donna's past to be a part of the festivities. Sophie thinks one of them may be her biological father and she wants to find out which one so he can walk her down the aisle on her big day.

Donna's best friends, both total riots, are there to celebrate as well and support the Mother of the bride.  Songs like "Money, Money, Money" "Super Trooper," "Take a Chance on Me," "Dancing Queen" and so many more tell the story of the hijinks that ensue as Donna discovers her long-lost lovers are all reunited in one place.

Mamma Mia Will Have Everyone Dancing in the Aisles

Director Jacob Hein said they chose Mamma Mia as the spring musical because it was something new to the students in the theatre troupe. "It is a different style of production than what has been done in the past several years so it exposes the students to something new. Previous shows include many great classics like Guys and Dolls and then last year we did the absurd musical comedy Spamalot, so a feel-good, “dancing in the aisles” and “singing it in the car on the way home” style of show was a nice departure."

And it really is such a fun show! I've seen it a couple of times on stage, and every time you notice something new or a character is presented in a way that has everyone in stitches laughing. Plus, you definitely leave with the happy songs stuck in your head. "ABBA is contagious!" Jacob joked, but he's not wrong!

Challenge Accepted!

This is quite a challenging show to take on, but knowing the talent of the kids and grown-ups involved, I can't wait to see it. "One of our challenges has been navigating through all of the music - this show has so many great solo moments but also features our ensemble and chorus in almost every single number." It’s a LOT of music for them to learn on top of the choreography and they are doing really well with it!

Artistic members of the community have helped the Panthers bring this show to life. "With Jordawn Howard, our expert choreographer, leading the way, John Campbell with TWO who helped us as our technical director - designing and helping build our set; and Molly Gross from KWC who helped with painting our set and bringing it to life.  Also I’ve had the amazing assistance of fellow teacher Christina Loscalzo who has been such a tremendous help with the production!"  Mr. Hein shared what a blessing it has been to have these professionals involved. The student actors and tech crew have learned a lot and had fun collaborating with them.

Don't Miss DCHS Spring Musical Mamma Mia!

Tickets for the show can be purchased at the door ahead of each show. March 21-23 tickets will go on sale at 6:00 pm and the show starts at 7; March 24 tickets are on sale at 1:00 pm and the show is at 2:00 pm.

Mr. Hein told me they are so excited for folks to get to see this show. If you attend, be on the lookout for some interesting "easter eggs."  "We always like to throw in little details for our audience to catch…so for people who have been in or seen a past musical production at DCHS, be on the lookout for some references to shows from our musical history at DCHS!"
