20 Foods You Should Never Refrigerate [VIDEO]
Have you ever wondered if you have something in the fridge does it actually need to be kept in the fridge? Will I get food poisoning if left out? You may be surprised to learn that these 20 products don’t need to be refrigerated. I know I was!
I found that certain foods should not be put into the fridge if you want them to last longer, keep their nutritional value and stay flavorful. Take a look at this list and let me know if you're guilty or not guilty. As you can see, I'm guilty pretty much on everything!
Tomatoes – I always wondered why my tomatoes don’t last very long. They get mushy so quick. Could be that I put them right in the fridge when I get home from the grocery. They should go on the counter. Guilty
Bread – If you like dry, stale bread then place it in the fridge, otherwise it’s not recommended! Of course, if you’ve made a turkey sandwich to eat later, refrigeration is smart. Otherwise, a bellyache may be in your future. Not Guilty
Bananas, Plumbs, Peaches and Avocados – Putting them in the fridge will delay ripening. Leave on the counter for longer life and better flavor! Guilty
Coffee – I didn’t know that coffee and coffee beans need a cool, dry and dark space to retain their flavor & freshness. Also, an airtight container is a must. I don’t drink coffee, but I’ve been serving it to family and friends right out of the fridge for years. Nobody ever complained, but now I know! Guilty
Onions - Keep unpeeled onions outside of plastic bags and fridges to extend their life. Always place onion after peeled in the fridge, but cover them up or you’ll have one stinky situation! Guilty
Honey – No need to place honey in the fridge as it will stay fresh and delicious for years to come if tightly sealed and in the cupboard. Not Guilty
Cake - Who doesn't like a nice big slice of cake? But, it looks like cake (with the exception of those made with real cream) will stay fresher longer in an airtight container on the counter. Not Guilty
Olive Oil – Putting it in the fridge will turn it harder so keep it in the cupboard or a dark cool place. Not Guilty
Potatoes – They belong in a dark, dry and cool place not the fridge. They also need to breathe so remove the potatoes from the plastic bag after you purchase them. Guilty of 1 Charge - I never knew to remove them from the bag!
Watermelon & Melons – They lose antioxidants if placed in the fridge. Keep the flavor longer by placing them on the counter. Guilty
Peanut Butter – It will turn it dry and hard. I used to do this until my sister asked me why and now it’s in the cupboard and always soft, creamy and tasty! Now Not Guilty
Eggs – Placing eggs inside the refrigerator will spoil the flavor of eggs. Guilty
Hot Sauce - You can store most in the cabinet for a few years! No need to keep in fridge. Guilty
Jam - Jams and Jellies have high amounts of preservatives and don't need to be refrigerated even after opened. Guilty
Pickles - They have a lot of preservatives so they don’t need to be refrigerated. You can keep them right in the cupboard for months and enjoy! Guilty
Ketchup – Because of the vinegar and preservatives ketchup is just fine outside of the fridge. I LOVE my ketchup cold so I’ll continue to refrigerate! Guilty and okay with it!
Alcohol - Hard Liquor should be stored at room temperature. Partly Guilty
Citrus Fruits - Citrus fruits will thrive best in natural temperatures in order to ripen, so keeping them in a cold fridge will make them mushy sooner. Guilty
Maple Syrup - Syrup should be placed in a cupboard. There's no need to put cold syrup on hot pancakes! Guilty
Cucumbers - Placing in the refrigerator will speed up the decay process. Be sure to find a cool and dry location to store those precious cucumbers. Guilty
