Last summer, we decided to hit the road and keep it in the Commonwealth. I'm a native Kentuckian, but there are parts of the Bluegrass that have never seen my smiling face. So it was time to correct that.

We made a beeline for Williamsburg KY and a cozy little Airbnb that served nicely as a home base. Then it was off to Appalachia. Cumberland Gap was breathtaking; I was reminded of what I felt like the first time I approached the rim of the Grand Canyon. That feeling is palpable.

Colonel Sanders called, so it was off to Corbin and the KFC Museum. Poisonous serpents made for a nice aside in Slade KY. And, of course, we visited Cumberland Falls. It was my second trip, and the next time I'm close by, there will be a third trip.

Cumberland Falls

On my first visit in 1977, I thought the falls looked like a gigantic chocolate milk fountain. Sounds like something a kid would think, right? (Although, as a grown-up, I still don't object to the concept.) But, during a summer 2024 visit, it was beautiful, green, and calm. Like this:

Cumberland Falls Flooded

The same cannot be said for Cumberland Falls circa February 2025. Inimitable videographer Ben Childers captured this yesterday:

The two words that come to mind? "Raging" and "angry." It's something about which you do not have to remind the folks who live in Clarksville TN. The Cumberland River has risen and its waters have flooded the city's streets.

And then you compound these issues with temperatures well below freezing, and you get an even bigger mess. Spring cannot get here fast enough.
