Kentucky Military History Museum Reopens on Veterans Day After Nearly a Year of Repairs
As big a lover of exploring Kentucky as I am, it seems unlikely that I would wait until well into adulthood before visiting our capital. But, sure enough, I never went to Frankfort until I was in my 40s. I've been back multiple times since then.
It's not just that it's the seat of the Commonwealth's government, but it's also loaded with rich history and a vibrant downtown area.
The Kentucky Military History Museum
The Kentucky Military History Museum is also a must if you're spending time in the capital, but such a visit hasn't been possible for most of the last year. Fortunately, the reason for the closure lies in basic structural needs, and nothing that caused a permanent shuttering.
Kentucky Military History Museum Reopening Ceremony
From December 9th, 2024, through June 1, 2025, crews were working on replacing the roof and making HVAC renovations. And now, the museum will be ready for its re-christening, so to speak, and on the perfect day.
On Veterans Day, November 11th, at 2 PM Eastern, there will be a ceremony of re-dedication for the museum that will include a ribbon cutting, light refreshments, and a highlights tour. Here's a virtual tour that sounds, near the beginning, like it could have been recorded today.
The History of the Kentucky Military History Museum
The Kentucky State Arsenal was destroyed in 1836, subsequently rebuilt, and reopened in 1850. In 1974, the arsenal was converted and then transformed into the Kentucky Military History Museum. And, now that it's back in "fighting form," it's ready for company, once again.
Should you go, don't forget about the Kentucky History Center, which is just a block down the street. Admission to the Kentucky Military History Museum's reopening is free to the public. But if you're attending, register here.
