Old Dominion Wins the St. Jude Angels Among Us Award in Memphis
On Tuesday evening, radio professionals from around the U.S. gathered for the finale event of the 2024 St. Jude Country Cares Conference. Country Cares is the huge network of radio stations, primarily country, that host annual radiothons to raise money for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis. It was there- in Memphis at the Peabody Hotel- that country music band Old Dominion was presented this year's Angels Among Us Award.
The Angels Among Us Award has some incredibly notable past recipients. They include Florida Georgia Line, Lady A, Darius Rucker, John Rich, Jake Owen, and Brad Paisley, who made an appearance earlier in the day Tuesday to celebrate Country Cares' 35th Anniversary.
That was certainly a highlight of the day.
A second highlight was being in the room when Old Dominion received their award Tuesday evening.
ALSAC St. Jude CEO Rick Shadyac praised the band's efforts to support the hospital. He said, "They've been supporting St. Jude since the beginning of their careers." He added that Old Dominion have participated in all seven of the This Shirt Saves Lives campaign and have performed at endless St. Jude benefit concerts and allowed their music to be used as 'story songs' for St. Jude Radiothons.
The band members were clearly humbled by the award, which had extra meaning for guitarist and keyboard player Trevor Rosen. Trevor explained that his wife, who was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin lymphoma at 17-years-old, is a childhood cancer survivor and is now mom to their four children. He explained, "There's always hope and miracles DO happen. A lot of times, those happen because of this place- St. Jude."
Matthew Ramsey, the band's lead singer, added, "We are a band that has won many awards. This one means more than any of them."
He closed by saying that, "St. Jude is a beautiful thing to be a part of. By following our dreams, we can see a difference in other peoples' lives. Thanks for showing us we have a purpose."
