The mission of Girls Inc. is one that is near and dear to my heart. I proudly serve on the board in Owensboro-Daviess County and see firsthand how this organization is committed to educating and inspiring girls to be strong, smart, and bold right here at home.

A Safe Place to Grow

Every month at our meeting, we have a mission moment where an amazing girl shares her story with us. Sometimes, through a shaky or soft-spoken voice filled with nerves. However, every month, the girls themselves boldly remind us why it is SO important to make sure they have a safe place to grow. Girls Inc of Owensboro has an incredible impact on them and their futures.

“As society sees what women can do, as women see what women can do, there will be more women out there doing things, and we’ll all be better off for it.”  — Sandra Day O’Connor, the first woman appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court, “Women in Power”

LOOK: Milestones in women's history from the year you were born

Women have left marks on everything from entertainment and music to space exploration, athletics, and technology. Each passing year and new milestone makes it clear both how recent this history-making is in relation to the rest of the country, as well as how far we still need to go. The resulting timeline shows that women are constantly making history worthy of best-selling biographies and classroom textbooks; someone just needs to write about them.

Scroll through to find out when women in the U.S. and around the world won rights, the names of women who shattered the glass ceiling, and which country's women banded together to end a civil war.
