There are likely many people who are strangers to the world of applying for financial aid or grants, meaning they probably have a surface understanding of the whole process. Back in my younger days, I only thought it applied to college, traditional four-year institutions. I learned long ago, however, that grants like Pell Grants are also available for vocational or trade schools.

Pell Grants

More often than folks might realize, trade school education can lead to big bucks in your bank account. Modernize.com informs us that plumbers in 2026 earn anywhere from $45 to $200 an hour. Cue the bug-eyed "shocked" emoji.

Electricians' hourly rates are also nothing to sneeze at. Neither are many of the jobs on this sofi.com list, like HVAC mechanics, auto mechanics, dental hygienists, carpenters, and truck drivers.

Restrictions Lifted on Certain Pell Grant Applications

Beginning this year, more and more students from low-income families will be able to qualify for Pell Grants for vocational education. Before 2026, Pell Grants were only available to students in a 15-week-or-longer vocational program. But now, Pell Grants will be there for students in short-term programs, ones that last between 8 and 15 weeks.

The path to a quality education just got a whole lot clearer for aspiring students who may have been wondering if there was ever a way to finance a trade school education, especially in fields like health care, information technology, and those involving skilled trades.

To know whether you are eligible for a Pell Grant, visit studentaid.gov and complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form.
