The 10 Largest Snowfalls in Tennessee History
While I may not remember everything from 1978, 1994, and 2004, I have the most vivid memories of the insane winter storms from each of those years. They are easily the three biggest I can recall.
The Great Blizzard of 1978
The funny thing is, there was a pretty big one in January of 1977 (I remember because we were out of school when former President Jimmy Carter was inaugurated that year), but the Great Blizzard of 1978 overshadowed it, and then some. That was the year we were all out of school for close to a month.
The January 17th, 1994 Snowstorm
The massive snowstorm on January 16th, 1994 was also memorable because of what we awakened to on the morning of January 17th. While so many of us were buried under blankets of snow, southern California was dealing with the catastrophic Northridge Earthquake. What a crazy, crazy day.
The December 23rd, 2004 Snowstorm -- a White Christmas, Indeed
And then we get to 2004, and, well, it was kind of like a slap in the face to all of us who like to see snow on Christmas. That's me. Give some Yuletide white and I'm good for the rest of the season. Except, 13 to 15 inches wasn't what any of us had in mind. My car got stuck in a snow drift that I didn't realize was a snow drift. This was December 23rd, and I still had Christmas shopping to do. A company vehicle came to the rescue, but that didn't stop something my grandmother used to say from swirling through my head.
"Be careful what you want; you just might get it."
Since then, I've been careful about dreaming of a white Christmas. So now that we've got snow on our minds, let's take a look at some memorable Tennessee snowfalls. These are the 10 largest in the Volunteer State's history. Do you remember?
