Whitesville, KY Students Raise Thousands for St. Jude Children’s Hospital With Annual Penny War
Every year, Whitesville students challenge each other to an epic penny war to raise money for patients at St. Jude Children's Hospital. This competition has become a tradition as friends go head to head trying to earn the most points and collect the most money. Their hard work and generosity are something to really be proud of!
It all started twelve years ago when Gavin Howard and his family became a part of the St. Jude family here at WBKR. Ever since, they have raised tens of thousands of dollars designing and selling shirts, hats, and throwing one heck of an annual party, Jammin' for St. Jude.
Along the way, Gavin recruited St. Mary of the Woods Elementary and Trinity High School in Whitesville to help raise money for children with cancer.
Each year, the students blow us away with their collective donations. Last year, they donated a total of $4866.93 to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. I think what touches my heart the most is the fact that these are kids and teens with a calling to help other kids and teens in need. They can empathize with the patients at St. Jude on a personal level and sacrifice their money and time to make a difference in the lives of people they don't even know. What an inspiration to us all.
This year, Whitesville blew it out of the water! Here is their grand total for the annual Penny War to benefit St. Jude. Absolutely incredible y'all.
